Watches become new mobile phones

July 4th, 2008 § 3 comments

The wrist watch industry has been suffering because many individuals are now using their mobile devices to keep track of the time and set alarms. The solution was to combine the best features of the watch with the best features of the mobile device, now you can make calls and keep a nice piece on your wrist. This trend has begun hitting technologically advanced cities first, IE. Shanghai, Tokyo.

If the testing markets respond well, know that the more advanced devices will start arriving in stores fourth quarter of 2008. Check out the pictures for various styles.

Possible Client(s): Casio and Palm

Possible Plan:

A few years ago Casio developed mobile phones which were shock resistant in a similar fashion to the popular G-Shock line of products. The reason Casio’s phone did not work is because they were competing in an oversaturated “flip phone” market where consumers were already making a switch to convergence devices.

The second potential client, Palm is in need of new life for their declining brand. The Treo is by far their most successful mobile device and product innovation seems to be on the decline. Collaborations have become a sustained trend that will not disappear any time soon, Palm must align themselves with a reputable watch brand (Casio) that can benefit mutually from the relationship. Palm once tried to create watch companions for their once popular standalone PDAs but technology was archaic in comparison to today’s standards. Palm watches did not work was because they weren’t considered a legitimate time keeping company by the public, the audience they targeted with the Palm watch would rather keep their Seiko and a Palm separate. However, the trend of convergence devices, IE. Apple’s iPhone, has given the Casio X Palm collab a real possibility.

These multifunctional watches are bringing back watches on the wrists. These gadgets are of great use and help to perform different tasks at the same time. I saw a lot of multifunctional watches at eWatches.
